Significant Event?

At least once every five minutes some commentator mentions how significant it is for a black man to win the Iowa Caucus for the democrats. And that's on Fox News.

It is historic, but how significant is it really? Maybe its the perception of my red state glasses, but before you crown him king for such a monumental feat shouldn't the accomplishment be weighed against the competition? Yes an African American man has won the first caucus of the 2008 election, but against who? A former first-lady who is loathed at an almost 3 to 1 margin and claims her experience as wife makes her the perfect Commander-in-Chief, and a former ambulance chasing trial lawyer with a $400 haircut.

Maybe my disgust for Hillary and Edwards is blinding me from seeing the real achievement?

I don't want to discredit Obama at all, but he didn't win an open race on his own. Obama was propelled by an anti-Hillary sentiment and the lack of an alternative choice. To put it plainly, in an open field in a general election, I don't believe Obama gets more than a third of the Iowa vote.

Congratulations to Barack Obama on the win. There is no question that we have come far as a nation when a black man is probably the front runner for the democratic nomination. I think its great, but lets not make more out of it than it is. When he racks up three or four more primaries (which he probably will) then it will be a significant statement. If he get the nomination it will be an even greater statement. And if he wins the election, it would be a clear signal that broadscale racism is virtually dead. But the whole horse race is left, we've only just cleared the gates.

The Invisible Men

For eight years, Barack Obama was a state Senator in Illinois, yet you wouldn't know it based on his records from the time. There are none. Nothing. Nada. Eight years serving the good people of Illinois, and aspiring candidate Barack Obama has maintained not a single record. No notes, no letters, no memos or e-mails. Nothing about legislation he voted for or people whom he helped. Nothing.

Really? I find it hard to believe that someone who wants to be the Commander-in-Chief and the leader of the free world has no records from his tenure in office. Nothing about his accomplishments or legislative agendas for eight years? Maybe there were none.

John Edwards too is responding to calls for notes and records from his time in elected office. Try not to laugh. While I am surprised that there are no records from Obama's state senate career, I will be very surprised if there are any records from Edward's one term as a U.S Senator from the state of North Carolina. As a North Carolinian I can guarantee you there is nothing of prominence in that record. The only person Edwards helped during his one term in the Senate was himself. Oh, and a small collection of barbers and salon owners. It doesn't take many $400 haircuts to make a difference around here.

No, I Will Not give up my SUV.

No matter how bad he wants it, John Edwards can not have my SUV. Sorry, that might win you votes with some far-left wackjobs... but the rest of us don't want some politician with a home that totals over 28,200 square feet and his own SUVs telling us what we can and cannot drive. I don't tell Mr. Edwards that he can't have a bedroom larger than many North Carolinians' homes (600 square feet is a big bedroom). So, why does Johnboy think he can tell me what I can or cannot drive.

No, I Will Not give up my SUV. You'll have to pry the keys out of my cold dead hands.
